Mother charged after newborn son strangled
A WOMAN who strangled her baby son shortly after giving birth to him in a bathroom has been charged with murder, Minhang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The 22-year-old, surnamed Li, a migrant from the southern Yunnan Province, admitted to killing the baby, said prosecutors.
Li said she couldn’t afford to raise the child and didn’t want her family to know about him.
She was sent to a hospital in Minhang District on January 20, after giving birth a month prematurely.
She told a doctor that she gave birth in the bathroom of her home but that the child died there. The doctor then called police.
At first, Li told police she’d believed the baby was dead as his eyes were closed and she couldn’t detect breathing.
She then ripped off the umbilical cord, washed the child’s body and put it a plastic bag, Li told police.
But a forensics officer said marks on the baby’s face and throat indicated he was strangled and smothered.
Li then confessed to killing the baby, said police.
She said her boyfriend had left her when he learned she was pregnant.
