Murderer pardoned by his two daughters

A father who tried to kill his twin daughters as revenge on his wife who insisted on divorce has been sentenced to two years in jail, the Songjiang District People's Court said today.

The twin daughters wrote a letter to their father, identified only as Zhang, to express their forgiveness and hoped he could return home early.

Zhang suspected his wife had an extramarital affair and strangled her neck with an electric wire in March, which made his wife run away from home.

Zhang called his wife at the end of April after drinking some alcohol and threatened to die with the twin daughters if she did not come home.

After his wife refused, Zhang tried to suffocate his daughters with cooking gas. He relented when the girls pleaded and took them to his wife's temporary home. His wife wasn't at home, so he called her again and was refused as before.

In a rage, Zhang attempted to jump into a nearby river together with his two daughters. The girls' cry alarmed passers-by and they were saved.

Zhang showed regret after reading the letter from his daughters at the court hearing. The daughters blamed his abnormal behavior for the family conflict.

The court convicted Zhang of attempted murder but gave him a light sentence because the victims had pardoned him.
