Necklace thieves get long jail terms

TWO men who sped away on a motorcycle after pulling gold necklaces off the necks of three pedestrians got stiff jail terms from the Minhang District People's Court yesterday.

The convicts, Wang Xiaoyi and Ma Ming'an, both 24, were sentenced to 11 years and 10 years, respectively, and fined 21,000 yuan (US$3,320) for forcibly seizing the necklaces valued at more than 25,000 yuan.

The court said Wang was in charge of driving the motorcycle while Ma would snap the necklaces as their vehicle passed victims at low speed. The two are from southwestern China's Guizhou Province.

On the morning of June 29, they seized necklaces from three women on Dushi Road, Beisong Road and Binchuang Road in Minhang District between 9:50am and 10:50am. Wang said he would speed up the motorcycle after Ma got the gold necklace.

The suspects were caught and the necklaces were returned to the owners, the court said.

Wang had just been released on May 17 after being jailed for three years for robbery.
