New Year cheer for needy residents
SOME 5 million needy and elderly residents are to receive help from local government to ensure they can enjoy a happy New Year's Day and Spring Festival.
Around 1 million needy people and 4 million retired people, college students from needy families and children of rural migrant workers will share 230 million yuan (US$33 million), said the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
This is to offset the rising consumer price index.
Some of the groups, including the disabled, needy seniors, the unemployed and people living below the poverty line in suburban areas, will receive a one-off cash payment. Officials couldn't reveal how much this will be.
Families living below the poverty line in urban areas will get a 150 yuan food coupon to buy festival foods.
"We will try our best to send some warmth to needy people in the cold winter," said bureau Director Ma Yili.
