New bricks help to clean rivers
MAKING bricks from river sediment can not only clean the water but also help prevent erosion by being used to build retaining walls, an associate professor with the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology said yesterday.
The new process, developed by the university, was being demonstrated on Chongming Island with a view to its wider adoption.
“Originally, we did an investigation of river sediment and tried to solidify the heavy metal to repair the ecological systems in rivers,” said Li Feipeng, of the university’s School of Environment and Architecture.
They had thought about firing bricks in a kiln but city officials told them it was better to do the process on site to avoid secondary pollution during shipment.
Experiments finally found an unfired solution to make bricks by adding bonding agents to the sediment.
