New flower market in Pudong
SHANGHAI’S largest flower market will open next month in Pudong’s Zhuqiao Town, officials said yesterday. The old market in Sunqiao will be demolished and merged with the new one.
The indoor market on 112 Huazhou Road takes up an area of 200,000 square meters — bigger than the 160,000-square-meter old market in Sunqiao Town.
“The new market will serve as a high-end trade and exhibition center for flowers and gardening equipment to attract both local buyers and tourists,” said Guo Along, an official in charge of market management.
The market will deal mainly in wholesale but will also have retail businesses.
Miniature trees, flowers, birds, fish and insects will also be sold there, Guo said. A warehouse and logistic centers are also coming up at the market.
The market can be accessed from Yuandong Avenue Station on Metro Line 2 and G1501 Expressway. Its proximity to Pudong International Airport means the imported flowers will be much fresher than before, Guo said.
An official with the Sunqiao Modern Agriculture Development Zone said the old market posed fire hazards as it was covered with flammable membranes.
Ma Shiyong, who had a shop in Sunqiao, said most of the shop owners planned to move into the new market.
