New flying mode at Pudong airport cuts delays, wait time
AIRCRAFT are being allowed to land or take off simultaneously on two runways at Pudong International Airport from yesterday, cutting down on the long waiting time and flight delays.
It can increase the number of takeoffs and landings per hour to 85 from the current 65, said Lu Wen, an air traffic controller at the airport.
Previously, an aircraft had to keep a distance of at least 2 kilometers from the plane ahead of it on the two parallel runways. Under the new mode, the aircraft can take off or land “shoulder to shoulder.”
The new mode will also mean shorter circling time in the air before landing, the air traffic controller of the East China Regional Administration under the Civil Aviation Administration of China announced yesterday.
Two passenger aircraft landed at the No. 2 and No. 3 runways at the Pudong airport yesterday morning.
Enhanced radar system will guide the pilots, who will separately receive training for the new flying mode. The air traffic controllers also need to stay calm and show strong mental character and judgement, said Chen Wei, another controller.
The new process will come as a boon for travelers during the Spring Festival travel rush.
The Pudong airport has three runways while the fourth is expected to become operational in March. It will be used only for landing while the No. 3 runway for takeoffs, which can help increase efficiency.
