New navigation system on trial
SHANGHAI maritime authority will put on trial China’s indigenous Beidou system for ship navigation at the Yangshan Deep-Water Port.
The port is forced to delay the operations of large ships for about 45 days every year because of poor visibility, leading to some 1.65 billion yuan in losses to the shipping companies.
The project was jointly launched by the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, Shanghai SIPG Group and Shanghai Maritime University, which have been working on involving Beidou CORS system into ship convoy plans since last year.
Cargo ships will be able to enter and leave Yangshan Deep Water Port under a visibility within 200 meters in the future, the maritime authority said.
