Newborn sold 3 times returned to city and 2 sellers in court
A newborn sold by his drug-addicted parents and then resold two more times is now safe with an adoptive family, and two men involved in the case were tried on child trafficking charges, the Fengxian District Prosecutors' Office announced yesterday.
No verdict has been announced yet in the case.
Prosecutors said the one of the suspects, surnamed Xie, told the baby's parents, both unemployed addicts, that he could help them find a local adoptive family for their newborn son in 2010. After the parents were persuaded to give the boy to Xie, Xie gave them a “support” payment of over 7,000 yuan (US$1,136), supposedly from the adoptive family.
Xie then resold the baby for 18,000 yuan to another man, surnamed Chen, who then resold the baby to one of his relatives in Shandong Province at the same price.
The baby was returned to Shanghai by police and is now being raised by his adoptive parents.
