Nursing center fined for false claims on its website
A POSTNATAL nursing center, where five newborn babies were down with viral infection, has been fined 100,000 yuan (US$16,129), authorities said yesterday.
Five babies at Baby Garden Nursing Center on Xikang Road in Jing’an District had fever and diarrhea in January this year with four of them needing urgent hospitalization.
The center had claimed on its website that it had a strong professional medical team and hired experts and consultants from some top maternity hospitals like the Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, Shanghai Red House Maternity and Infant Hospital and Shanghai Children’s Hospital. It also put the pictures and profiles of some medical experts online.
But in actual fact, the nursing center had never cooperated with the hospitals or the doctors. It also did not have doctors with professional certificates, the Jing’an Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said yesterday.
The center came into the spotlight after one of the parents complained to the authorities about the infection. The babies were diagnosed with a rotavirus, which can lead to inflammation of the intestine. Rotaviruses are the most common cause of severe diarrhea among infants and children, especially in autumn and winter.
Postnatal nursing is gaining in popularity among young couples for both the mother and the newborn.
However, there are no professional guidelines for the service and no special health license is required to open such a center. Their staff members are not required to hold professional caretaker certificates.
The centers are not considered health or medical facilities. Public health law makes no mention of them, so they are not under the purview of any government agency.
Baby Garden only holds a business license registered at the city’s industrial and commercial authorities.
