Officials seize box full of snakes
CUSTOMS officials at a railway station in Shanghai on Sunday found seven live snakes in a parcel sent from Taiwan.
It was the first time the city’s inspection and quarantine authorities had made such a find, officials said yesterday. The serpents were spotted when the parcel was put through a scanner, they said.
“Live animals that come into the country without going through an inspection and quarantine check pose a threat to local animals and agriculture,” said Li Qiang, the director of the local inspection bureau.
Quarantine officials have so far this year intercepted nine batches of live animals being illegally transported into the country from overseas, he said.
