One-year sentence for mahjong killing
A MAN who accidentally killed his wife during an argument, after she stayed out all night playing mahjong, was sentenced to one year in prison with a one-year reprieve for manslaughter, Jiading District People's Court said today.
Prosecutors said the man, surnamed Jin, met his wife at the gate of their residential complex on October 2, 2011. She had stayed out all night playing mahjong, not returning home until noon. Angered at this Jin, began arguing with his wife at the gate, the court heard.
During the quarrel, Jin pushed his wife and her head hit a car as she fell to the ground. She suffered brain injuries and died the next day, despite emergency treatment, the court heard.
Jin's in-laws called on the court to severely punish Jin. Jin pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he was willing to take care of his late wife's parents and compensate them. Noting that Jin had turned himself in, the court handed down a lighter sentence.
