Online tour operators take ‘free rides’ off the shelves
NINE Shanghai-based online travel operators including Ctrip and Lvmama have taken more than 800 tour packages off their shelves after the country’s top tourism watchdog accused them of luring customers with unreasonably low price or even free deals and then hitting them with “extras” such as over-priced goods at the destination, extra shopping and other hidden expenses.
The China National Tourism Administration has ordered the companies to review their operations and vowed to crack down on trips that are too cheap to be true.
The travel companies, which also include Tuniu and Mafengwo, in turn blame their providers and say they will punish violators, including potentially terminating contracts.
Ctrip and Lvmama have each taken 100 tours off their offerings and are looking at the firms who supplied them. The administration’s order also applies to the travel arm of Alibaba, Alitrip — now called Fliggy, Qunar.com and CNCN.com.
