Operation gets pencil out of baby鈥檚 right eye
A 19-month-old baby boy who accidentally inserted a pencil into his right eye has been successfully operated on at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University.
When his family, who come from Hangzhou, sought help from the hospital, they did so after five other hospitals had declined to accept the boy who was running a fever, vomiting and had a swollen eye as a result of the accident, which occurred last Friday.
The Children’s Hospital said yesterday that doctors had managed to “take residues of the tip of the pencil from the boy’s orbit and fragments of the bones of his orbit from his brain.”
The operation, which took three hours, was declared a success.
The young patient is now being taken care of in the hospital’s intensive care unit. He should recover well with no damage to his sight as long as no serious infection occurs over the next two weeks, the hospital said.
