Orders for German crabs close
The Chinese importer of German hairy crabs said yesterday that it has finished collecting orders in China .
The crabs are currently undergoing inspection and quarantine tests in Germany to prepare for permission to be imported into China, said Jiao Jian, CEO of Jiangsu Dadi Yuansheng E-commerce Co.
The statement came after China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said permission has not been given for German hairy crabs to be sold in China.
But Jiao said his company is using “an innovative pre-sale mode.” Instead of getting import permission in advance, Jiao said he collects orders first, and then prepares the goods and makes a declaration to customs.
The importer began selling crab coupons for German hairy crabs this week. At least 32,000 orders were received through group-buying website via juhuasuan.com, despite the uncertainty.
The German crabs retail at 199 yuan (US32.25) per package of three males and three females — considerably cheaper than the home-bred crustacean.
In China, hairy crabs are a delicacy, in season from September to November.
