Overpackaged tea pulled off shelves

MAJOR supermarket outlets in the city had some of their tea products ordered off the shelves after the tea was found to fail to meet the rules on packaging, the city's quality watchdog said yesterday.
Some outlets of Century Mart, E-Mart, Lotus, NGS and Trust Mart were selling the tea, which had too much empty space in the packages, judged as failing the packaging rules. It also contribute to waste disposal problem. The producers, mostly in neighboring Hangzhou City, have been ordered to fix the problem.
The supermarkets have been told to increase their watchfulness over excess packaging or they will face a fine of up to 50,000 yuan (US$8,064), the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said.
Among the tea that failed checks was West Lake longjing tea made by Hangzhou Longdu Tea Co Ltd, biluochun green tea produced by Hangzhou Hupao Tea Leaf Co Ltd, and pu'er tea from Guchashu Tea Leaf Co Ltd in Yunnan Province.
A longjing green tea produced by Shanghai Tanlu Tea Co Ltd and sold at Shanghai Jiu Guang Department Store also had excessive packaging.
Some 43 batches of tea products out of 142 were found to have overpackaging problems in the latest inspection.
Packaging is judged by the number of layers of packaging papers and the ratio of empty space inside boxes.
