Pair get 3 years for sabotaging computer systems
IN a first case of its kind in China, two men who hacked users’s router settings and diverted online traffic from directory listings sites to one of their own choice were sentenced to three years in jail with a three-year reprieve for sabotaging computer systems, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
It’s the nation’s first criminal case linked to online traffic diversion, the court said. The pair earned nearly 755,000 yuan (US$118,000) in illicit money between December 2013 and October 2014, all of which was confiscated by the court.
According to the court, the two hackers, surnamed Fu and Huang, rented several servers to modify the Domain Name System settings of web users’ routers. Then when the users visited a directory listings site, they would be automatically transferred to another website 5w.com, which was known to the duo.
The pair made money from Hangzhou Jiushang Science and Technology Co, the owner of 5w.com, for diverting online traffic to the website.
Their misdeeds came to the notice of one of the directory listings sites they stole traffic from, 2345.com, in October last year.
The website reported it to local police and officers soon identified one of the two suspects, Fu, the next month. On November 17, Fu surrendered and led police to his accomplice Huang. Both confessed to online traffic theft.
