Parents pay swindler for children's path to celebrity
A woman who swindled more than 100,000 yuan (US$15,648) from eager parents by promising that she could help their children become showbiz stars was sentenced to three years in jail by a local court today.
Li Lin, 24, a former employee in a local film school, contacted several parents whose children were studying at the school and said she was looking for "future stars" to play in a TV commercial. The parents paid her over 100,000 yuan for acting auditions between last December and this March.
Li also asked those parents to buy her expensive clothes, shoes, handbags and jewelry, the Jing'an District People's Court heard.
It was not until Li disappeared that the parents realized that they had been cheated, and they called the police.
Police found Li had spent all the ill-gotten money on drugs and luxury products. The court also fined her 3,000 yuan.
