Park celebrates birth of first fawn

A BABY water deer has been seen by visitors at Binjiang Forest Park, believed to be the first one born in the park, officials said today.

As the timid deer usually live in isolated areas, officials don't know exactly when the fawn was born, but estimate it was around May 1.

"Earlier, we found a female water deer was pregnant," said Han Yanmin, an official with the park. "And the expected date of birth was May 1."

Although officials strengthened the monitoring of pregnant deer, they failed to find the fawn because the park was too large and water deer are afraid of humans.

The fawn was seen near the park's azalea garden by a family who shot several pictures.

Water deer were frequently seen in Shanghai suburbs in the late 19th century. But due to urbanization and dense population, the animal had disappeared by the 1980s. To replenish the species' population in Shanghai, 12 water deer were introduced from Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, and were freed in the park.
