Payout for drowned toddlers
PARENTS who sued a village committee after their young twin boys drowned in a public fishing pond were largely responsible for the accident but will receive compensation, Jiading District People’s Court ruled yesterday.
The village in the district’s Xuhang township rejected the parents’ demand for 626,000 yuan (US$95,027) compensation and the court will mediate and deliver a final verdict at a later date.
The toddlers left home to play on March 1 but never returned. Villagers later found their bodies in the pond.
The couple told the court that they were at work when the twins, who were usually cared for by their grandmother, left home.
The couple insisted that the committee was responsible for the accident because there were no warning signs or fences around the pond.
The court acknowledged that the pond is dangerous, but said the parents failed to take proper care of them.
