Pedestrian bridges to line Huangpu’s banks

EIGHTEEN pedestrian bridges will be built along the banks of Huangpu River by the end of the year, the city’s major engineering designing body said.
The sightseeing bridges — 12 in Pudong and the rest in Puxi — will have separate lanes for walking and cycling.
The bridges are part of the city government’s plan to open 45-kilometer-long continuous paths on both sides of the river by the end of the year, the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute (Group) Co said yesterday.
Already under construction, the bridges will span creeks and waterways running off Huangpu River, or skirt round some urban facilities along the riverbanks that interrupt the continuous paths, said Dai Wei, a senior engineer with the institute. “The bridges are designed in various styles such as cable-stayed, arched or double-layers to be harmonious with the nearby architecture style on the riverbanks.”
They will be about 100 meters long on average and designed to be durable for at least half a century, Dai added.
“The steel structures will be manufactured in factories and assembled on site to reduce the environmental impact and shorten the construction schedule.”
They are termed “park bridges” due to their pedestrian-only designs and beautiful appearances just like those in parks. Dai said the bridges will become landmarks along the river.
The Pudong New Area government launched a global designing competition to pick up the best design ideas on the 12 bridges along the east bank of the river, known as the East Bund.
An expert panel led by Zheng Shiling, a professor of urban planning and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, decided the final designs.
Chuanyang River Bridge, spanning 165 meters, will become the city’s first “back cable-stayed truss bridge,” a combination of cable-stayed and truss bridges, Dai said. The innovative design allows enough space for ships sailing on the busy artificial Chuanyang river, while avoiding being too tall to obscure the river scenery, he added.
Sanlin Port River Bridge has a curved bridge deck, and is wrapped by a grey steel box to suit the nearby Anhui-style residential houses, according to the institute.
Yangjing Port Bridge has two layers — the upper story is designed for pedestrians, the lower deck for cyclists.
Meanwhile, some new flood prevention walls are also being constructed along the riverbanks to ensure the safety of the riverside paths and the whole city, the institute said.
A two-layer flood prevention wall has been newly developed to create a better riverside scenery and allow people be closer to Huangpu River, said Wu Xianchen, another senior engineer with the institute who is in charge of the flood wall designing.
