People upset at closure of bakery chain
MORE than 5,000 people have complained of being cheated by the “sudden” closure of 33 outlets of a local bakery chain, Shanghai TV reported yesterday.
The disgruntled consumers are all holders of prepaid cards for Jepson Bread, the report said, citing figures from the Market Supervision Bureau of the Pudong New Area.
Some people had “more than 1,000 yuan” (US$160) left on their cards, the report said.
The stores that closed are in Minhang District and in the Pudong New Area, it said.
A woman surnamed Wang, who had “more than 300 yuan” on her card, said she was surprised by the closure of her local store.
“Everything seemed normal,” she was quoted as saying.
“It ran out of stock quickly, but I thought that was just because it was popular,” she said.
The TV report said there was “hearsay” that the company was failing, but added the firm had threatened legal action against anyone who circulated rumors.
The report did not say how many people had lost their jobs as a result of the closure of the stores.
