Pet boarding price hike

Pet owners need to make preparations ahead of time if they want to board their pets during the upcoming Spring Festival.

Pet shops are charging higher prices during the week-long holiday season because of having fewer staff and the rising cost of pet food.

Some families offer boarding services at a relatively low price, but experts warn that they might not be able to guarantee a healthy and clean environment for pets.

A pet store in Xuhui District has raised its daily pet boarding fees by 40 yuan (US$6) to 120 yuan for small animals and 160 yuan for larger animals, such as big dogs.

Pet owners will have to pay extra if they want to have their pets bathed or get extra services, such as grooming.

Similar price hikes have been reported in other pet stores across the city and owners may have to pay more than 1,000 yuan in total for the services over the holiday.

If that price is too much to pay, some private dog breeders are offering boarding services on local online pet forums. Their services are much cheaper and most of them charge between 30 yuan and 60 yuan a day.
