Plastic pipes to solve flood woes
Plastic pipes will replace the age-old iron pipes in the city’s drainage system that is expected to control floods, the Shanghai Architectural Society said.
The new three-layer plastic drainage pipes are 2.8 meters, smooth and resistant to rust, thus ensuring better performance in handling floods. The iron and galvanized pipes currently used in the city’s drainage system are vulnerable during floods as they rust easily and are of a smaller caliber.
The plastic pipes are already in use at some key roads like Danyang Road, Beijing Rd W. and Renmin Road which often get flooded during downpours.
On October 8, more than 50 roads and 600 households were flooded in the heaviest rainfall in the city in 52 years. Tragedy struck when two workers died in a factory in Jiading District’s Jiangqiao area. The man and the woman were reportedly electrocuted when they were trying to pass a flooded area.
Water in a tunnel near Songjiang East Bus Station almost covered the roof of a bus which was stuck there.
