Police catch suspected jewelry thief

A man who stole more than 1 million yuan (US$160,000) worth of jewelry in Fujian Province was caught on March 15 at Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai, police said today.

The suspect, surnamed Sun, pried open the trunk of a car parked in front of a pharmacy in Fuzhou City that day and stole a shopping bag containing 72 pieces of jewelry including necklaces, pendants and diamond rings, police said.

He also stole an iPhone 6 from the car.

Sun then bought a train ticket to Shanghai at South Fuzhou Railway Station because, he later told police, he was afraid of getting caught.

Sun looked nervous when he got off the train in Shanghai at about 8pm, alerting police officers. Police said the stolen items were found when officers checked Sun’s belongings.
