Police choppers get into act to keep roads safe
SHANGHAI will use police helicopters during the Chinese New Year’s peak travel period which started yesterday.
The choppers will keep an eye on errant inter-provincial coaches on busy highways that link Shanghai with neighboring cities like Hangzhou and Ningbo, as well as expressways connecting downtown areas to suburban districts of Qingpu and Jiading. Their main task would be to check on buses which illegally make unscheduled stops or pick up passengers in the middle of a journey. That, police said, poses safety hazards and overloading.
On detecting a violation, the aerial patrol will tip off the road traffic law enforcement team of the vehicle’s location. Violating vehicles will be fined 1,000 yuan (US$160) to 3,000 yuan.
Previously, errant buses would be ordered to return to the start point and the passengers and the luggage going through the scanner again.
About 5.5 million passengers are expected to travel by long distance buses from Shanghai during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush. By afternoon yesterday, a total of 80 violations was recorded — half of them picking up passengers at unscheduled stops.
This year, police officers have also been given the right to check passengers’ bags, especially late passengers.
