Police hold 600 in 100 gang busts this year
SHANGHAI police busted 100 criminal gangs involved in everything from bogus home removal companies to scalping doctors’ appointments slots in the first 10 months of the year.
Around 600 suspects have been held, said the city management authority.
Some gangs set up websites with names similar to legitimate removal companies to attract unsuspecting customers.
But when they had loaded up and were on the road they would call demanding more cash, threatening to dump the household’s furniture.
Others ran long-distance coach companies, scaring off would-be rivals to ensure they had a monopoly.
Gangs also used strong-arm tactics to monopolize wet markets and run illegal cabs, while others were involved in gambling houses, said the authority.
And to take advantage of the popularity of certain doctors, gangs of scalpers would register to see the practitioner, then sell their slot to genuine patients unable to get a booking.
Some cases had a big social impact, such as crooked real estate agents monopolizing house information in Jiading District, the authority said.
Officials said the city monitored 104 villages with high levels of criminal activity.
Residents can call the 12345 hotline with information for city management.
