Police investigate illegal health clinic after death

Health authorities in Putuo District are investigating an underground clinic after a 28-year-old woman died from severe complication after receiving intravenous drips.

The victim’s family, who are from Anhui Province, said they would sue the unlicensed doctor and seek compensation, while also alerting people, especially migrant workers, to the dangers of such clinics.

Cao Hongzhen sought treatment at the clinic for cold and fever about 5pm last Thursday. She was put on a drip but developed side effects like nausea and dizziness while her face turned purple.

The “doctor” told her to drink lot of water after returning home. But her husband said Cao’s condition worsened on reaching home and they rushed her to the Putuo District Central Hospital.

Cao lost consciousness as soon as they reached the hospital. She was declared dead at 8:30pm, according to Shanghai Evening Post.

The family called police and filed a complaint against the clinic. The “doctor” was detained the same night.

Cao lived at a dilapidated complex on Laozhenbei Road, which has a high percentage of migrant workers.

Cao’s husband Wang Gaozhong claimed that the clinic had been operating for 10 years and most of the residents in their complex would visit the clinic to treat minor health issues because it was convenient.

There were five other similar clinics in the neighborhood, most of which were shut down by the authorities. This one survived because it was away from the public eye and did not have any sign boards. Only people in the neighborhood were aware of its existence.
