Police nab 3 suspects for stealing jewelry
THREE suspects have been taken into custody for allegedly stealing more than 50 million yuan (US$8.04 million) worth of jewelry from an apartment in Minhang District, police said yesterday.
A woman, surnamed Jiang, a jewelry businesswoman from Taiwan, reported the loss of 159 pieces of jewelry on Saturday.
They were meant to be displayed at an exhibition in the city from April 24 and 25.
The suspects, surnamed Tang, Tan and Li, were caught in Jiuting Town in Songjiang District at about 2:30am on Sunday and the stolen jewelry recovered from them.
It was handed back to the owner.
The three confessed to the police that they managed to steal the jewelry by climbing through the windows into the apartment on the fifth floor.
The three are from southwestern China’s Chongqing city and got to know each other while serving terms in jail, police said.
