Police seek man who attacked beggar
POLICE have appealed for help in their search for a young man who beat up an elderly beggar on a Metro train.
Footage posted online of the sustained attack on a Line 1 train on Friday has been viewed more than 1 million times.
At one point, when the attacker orders his victim to pick up cash from the floor, he warns him, “I’m not in a good mood today, so don’t try to make me angry.”
Police said yesterday that they are still seeking the attacker and beggar, and asked anyone with information to come forward.
A witness who uploaded the clip onto youku.com said initially the attacker gave the beggar 6 yuan (96 US cents), but then demanded the cash back, complaining that the beggar earned more than he did.
The video shows the man abusing the elderly man and hitting him on the head. When other passengers intervene, he begins kicking his victim.
The beggar gives the man bank notes, some of which he takes before spreading the rest on the carriage floor.
He then orders the beggar to pick the money up, and seeing that he is reluctant to do so begins kicking him again.
Other passengers finally stopped the attack, which lasted several minutes.
The beggar then left the train alone.
Police said although there are regulations against begging on the Metro network, it is completely unacceptable to attack someone who is begging.
