Police trial infrared cameras
A NEW high-definition video camera capable of capturing images in the dark is being put through its paces by traffic police in Baoshan District.
The device, which is about the size of a cigarette packet and worn on the front of the uniform, is battery powered and can run for about 20 hours on a single charge.
Thanks to an infrared function — which activates automatically in low light — and the ability to capture audio, the new cameras are a boon in fighting crime at night, police said, adding that about 200 are currently being trialed in the district.
The aim of the device is to ensure criminals do not escape prosecution due to a lack of concrete evidence, police said.
Last month, two men were detained for assaulting a traffic police officer who had issued them with a parking ticket, after the incident was captured on one of the new cameras.
Police said the devices will also be used to capture evidence of people committing traffic crimes, such as using their cellphones while driving.
The cameras will be introduced across the city if the trial proves a success, they said.
