Polluters must pay town 887,000 yuan

A TOWN government along a river severely polluted by acidic industrial waste in the city's suburban Songjiang District won 887,000 yuan (US$139,016) in compensation yesterday from polluters after prosecutors suggested the town file a lawsuit.

The two convicted polluters, surnamed Jiang and Dong, are serving their sentences after they were sentenced to two years and 15 months in prison respectively in February.

Songjiang District prosecutors said Jiang hired Dong to collect 60 tons of waste acid from some 10 companies between February and March of last year, and flushed the residue into a sewer that led to the river, causing severe pollution in a 2-kilometer-long waterway of Hongxian River. The water turned rust-red and a lot of fish and aquatic plants died.

The town government paid a total of 887,266 yuan to abate the pollution and restore the ecosystem of the river.

"It is unfair that the town government should pay such a huge amount of money to cover the bad influence caused by polluters' personal behavior," said Zhang Aiyu, an official of Songjiang District's Prosecution Office.

Zhang said the office suggested the town government file a civil lawsuit and demand compensation from the convicted pair and three companies cited in the case - Shanghai Rixin Hot Dip Galvanzing Co, Haomeng Bicycle (Shanghai) Co and Shanghai Jiayu Chemical Co.
