Postal worker held over Japan iPhone thefts
A POSTAL worker has been held by city police over the theft of two iPhones that had been ordered from Japan.
One Shanghai customer, surnamed Li, bought an iPhone 6 for just under 5,000 yuan (US$806) from Apple’s Japanese website early last month.
It was sent by Japan Post to China Post Express Mail Service for delivery, Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday.
Tracking showed that the phone was mailed by Japan Post on December 7 to Shanghai.
However, there was no further update and Li did not receive his phone.
But he discovered that the phone had been activated and was in Shanghai.
When Shanghai EMS said that it had not received the parcel, Li alerted police.
Searching online, he discovered that the same thing had happened to a Pudong New Area resident who ordered an iPhone from Tokyo at the same time.
A suspect, who works for EMS, was later held by police. Neither his name nor job were revealed.
Li said he had been compensated by Shanghai EMS based on the price of the smartphone sold in China.
Some consumers buy iPhones from Japan because they are cheaper there.
EMS has been at the center of a recent controversy over almost 300 shipping containers — many containing goods bought online — that have been sitting at Waigaoqiao Port for months.
