Potentially lethal fake vehicle products seized
THE city's quality watchdog yesterday raided an illegal factory producing fake anti-freeze fluid, brake fluid and lubricant in Minhang District.
Officials said the fake products, which were mostly bought by construction vehicle drivers, were substandard and could lead to accidents.
The hideout was at the crossroads of Longwu Road and Liancao Road.
In its storehouse, more than 100 boxes of fake Kafule anti-freeze fluid and Kunlun lubricating oil were seized, said the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.
"Some products purported to be from the UK, but had a Chinese production certificate number, leaving no doubt they are fake," said Ye Zhiliang, an engineer with the Shanghai Petrochemical Quality Monitoring Office.
Initial tests showed the products had serious quality problems, which would harm vehicles or even cause accidents, said the bureau.
The hideout's owner, surnamed Xu, admitted that the products were fake.
"A bottle of Kafule brake fluid from our storehouse costs 80 yuan (US$12), and the real ones couldn't be that cheap," he said.
Xu said the fakes were usually sold to construction vehicle drivers "just because the products are cheap."
In the past two years, construction vehicles have been involved in dozens of fatal accidents in the city.
Officials said counterfeit manufacturers used cheaper raw materials to lower the cost of the products.
Anti-freeze fluid is normally made of glycol, but a fake is usually made of alcohol. This seriously damages the engine, officials said.
The case is still being investigated, they added.
