Prison warden gets 10 years on the inside
A FORMER Shanghai prison warden was sentenced to 10 years' inside yesterday for accepting 1.76 million yuan (US$257,800) worth of bribes to give preferential treatment to an inmate.
The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court also ordered the confiscation of 100,000 yuan of personal property of Weng Liming, former deputy director of the Shanghai Qingpu Prison.
The court said Weng, 44, had returned 1.7 million yuan in bribe money and surrendered to police.
The court believed Weng bought five apartments at 3,000 yuan per square meter, much lower than the market price, through a real estate company whose former boss, Du Jinxiang, was behind bars in the Qingpu prison.
The total price difference was 1.76 million yuan, which was ruled to be the bribes Weng accepted.
The current leaders of the real estate company, Yang Jianguo and Zhu Zhiqing, were introduced to Weng through friends and asked him to take good care of Du.
In return, Weng granted the prisoner priority treatment.
Weng altered Du's job from working with cement to working in a clinic. Weng also illegally reduced Du's penalty, saying Du had earned the reward by introducing business to the prison plant.
And, contrary to the rules, Weng allowed Du to visit his relatives twice within a year.
Weng's illegal behavior came to light last year when the city government was soliciting public opinion about his promotion to deputy director of the city's prison administrative bureau.
He told the court he hadn't realized he was taking advantage of his position to profit.
He thought it was different from directly receiving cash and properties.
Hearing the verdict yesterday, he told his family members not to cry.
