Probe after ‘kids had to slap each other’

CLAIMS that a teacher made schoolchildren slap each other on the face are being investigated.

Qingpu District Education Bureau began the probe following allegations from the father of a pupil at the school attended mostly by the children of migrant workers.

He also said that hungry children were denied lunch.

The parent, surnamed Li, told Shanghai Television Station that children in his son’s fourth grade class at Xiaokang Private Primary School didn’t have lunch on Tuesday because some children went outside to play during lunch break.

The class teacher was so annoyed that he also ordered children who were deskmates to slap each other on the face.

“Some girls cried after being slapped,” said Li. “My son’s deskmate was off, so he had to slap his own face.”

The teacher, who was not named, denied ordering children to slap each other when confronted by a TV reporter.

“The students made some mistakes and I told them the reasons. I explained to parents that was why they missed lunch,” the teacher said.

“I never asked them to slap each other‚“ he added.

Chang Hui, vice principal of the school, said she has received several complaints from the parents and the school is investigating the incident.

“We are collecting evidence now. We sincerely apologize to all the children and parents. If the complaint proves to be true, we will punish the teacher severely,” Chang said.
