Problem beef seized in local wholesale market
FOOD safety authorities seized a batch of water-infused beef that has no quarantine certificate as they made routine check in a wholesale market in Putuo District yesterday.
Officials found five tons of beef from Hebei Province had no quarantine certificate and two tons of beef contained excessive levels of water, police said yesterday.
A truck driver surnamed Jin knew the beef had no certificate but still transported the meat from Dachang County in Hebei to the Jiangqiao Frozen Food Wholesale Market on Caoyang Road.
A Shanghai trading company planned to sell the beef to a meat processing company in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. A company manager surnamed Yang said nearly 60 percent of the frozen meat sold in the market lack quarantine certificates, STV news reported.
Government regulations require every batch of beef from other places to undergo quarantine inspection in any of the eight highway check points on the city border. The truck passed the check point in Anting Town without being caught.
Jin confessed that he delivered 10 tons of water-infused beef to Shanghai in February and he is now on bail for illegal production and sales of unqualified products.
