‘Progressive cities’ show goodwill at get-together
FOUR memorandums of cooperation were signed yesterday at the Shanghai-Taipei Forum to promote exchanges and cooperation in district and community administration, protection of consumer rights, basketball and education in the two cities.
Shanghai’s Pudong New Area and Taipei’s Neihu District will communicate and support each other on district administration and community affairs.
Regarding protection of consumer rights, Shanghai and Taipei will learn each other’s ways and systems in solving related disputes and share innovative models in the area.
The two cities will also organize an annual basketball competition to improve the competition experience and capacity of their players and to promote development of the sport in both cities.
Shanghai University and the University of Taipei will organize communications among teachers, researchers and students, holding academic meetings, conferences, training classes and other activities and sharing academic information and materials.
Shanghai and Taipei have now signed 30 memorandums of cooperation since 2010, when the forum was initiated as an annual event held by the two cities in turn.
With the theme of “healthy cities,” this year’s forum provided a good opportunity for the two cities to exchange experiences in health care, said Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong, as health was a resource of happiness and common quest for people both on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan.
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je said the cross-Strait communication in the past 30 years since Taiwan lifted the curfew to allow its citizens to visit their families in Chinese mainland proved that people’s needs and interests were directions and targets for government’s efforts.
“I hope Taipei and Shanghai will always be open and progressive cities, where people can feel the friendliness and goodwill from each other,” the visiting mayor added.
