Public gets rare look at precious paintings
A COLLECTION of about 50 contemporary paintings went on display yesterday at the former Expo Axis site in the Pudong New Area.
The works are on loan from the Liu Haisu Art Museum and this is the first time they have been put on show outside its walls.
The pieces are by 12 local contemporary artists, including Shi Dawei and Che Pengfei, with several of them worth in excess of 200,000 yuan (US$32,300), said Huang Deping, an artist employed by the museum whose works are among those on display.
“This is the first time that the museum has allowed such valuable exhibits to be put on display outside the museum,” he said.
The paintings, which can be found in the Section 3 hall on level L1 in the River Mall, will remain on display until May 10, said Liu Wei, general manager of the Bailian Group, which runs the shopping center.
“The temperature and humidity inside the hall will be closely monitored to ensure the right environment for the paintings, while security guards will patrol around the clock,” he said.
Huang said that if the event at the former Expo Axis goes well, the museum will arrange more “outings” for its works.
“Fine art should be admired, not shut away inside a museum,” he said.
Meanwhile, a global food festival is also under way at the north end of the Axis in Celebration Square.
The event runs until Sunday and features about 70 stalls serving up tasty snacks and local delicacies from as far afield as Japan, South Korea, India, Thailand and Europe.
