Putuo residential complex first to use solar energy
SHANGHAI got its first solar power system to generate electricity for public facilities at a residential complex yesterday.
A total of 196 solar panels have been installed on the rooftops of two 25-floor high-rises and a garbage station at the 20-year-old Changgao community in Putuo District.
The panels will supply 50,000 kilowatt hours of clean energy every year to the elevators, lamps, electronic screens and other equipment in public areas across the community, the Caoyang Community Subdistrict said yesterday.
The rooftop solar-generated electricity can support the public facilities in all the 10 buildings and public areas in the community.
Excess electricity generated will be given back to the electricity grid, said Xu Daoyi, deputy director of the householder committee.
On cloudy days, the facilities will be powered by electricity supplied by the grid.
“The government will offer 1.3 yuan (20 US cents) per kwh subsidy to the community to encourage and promote the eco-friendly practice,” Xu said. The committee said it will invest all the subsidies to improve the facilities and environment in the community.
The committee had invited experts before installing the panels. Installation work started in December 2015 and it was tested early this month. About 1,000 kwh of electricity has already been generated.
The installation cost 700,000 yuan. The city, district and sub-district governments subsidized 600,000 yuan while the remaining was raised from residents.
“We supported the environmental-friendly project,” said Gao Jin, a senior resident who has lived in the complex since 1997. The community has 456 households and all of them had approved the installation.
Xu said the solar panels can save about 20,000 kilograms of coal per year and cut the carbon dioxide emission by 50,000 kilograms. The panels can be used for 25 years while the costs can be recovered in seven years.
The committee also installed an electronic screen in the complex that shows the amount of green energy it has generated.
