Puzzle over money stolen by girl, 4

A 4-YEAR-OLD girl was caught stealing from a market stall cash box while her mother distracted the stallholder, police said yesterday.

However, it is unclear what happened to money in the box.

For while the stallholder claims she lost thousands of yuan, no money was found on the child or her mother.

Another vendor at the market in Jinshan District saw the child fumbling around in the cash box on Monday and shouted at her.

The 28-year-old mother, surnamed Huang, who is three months pregnant, admitted to police that she told her daughter to steal from the vendor while she diverted her attention.

The vendor claimed that she lost at least 3,000 yuan (US$500) in the theft, but police found no cash on the child.

“I don’t know how much money my daughter took from the box, and I haven’t got any money from her,” Huang said.

Huang received a reprimand from police.
