Qualified optical staff required

STAFF workers of optical shops are required to hold professional optometrist qualifications, according to the city's first service quality standard on eyeglasses stores issued yesterday.

The standard, to be implemented in December, aims to regulate the optical market after complaints over problematic visual acuity testing and discomfort with new glasses, said Hu Dongfang, secretary general of the Shanghai Optometric and Optical Association.

The standard also regulates the procedures of visual acuity checks and requires eyeglasses stores to modify lenses or make new ones if consumers say they feel uncomfortable or dizzy after a certain amount of time wearing the glasses. Customers will be asked to walk for several minutes after wearing the glasses to see if the vision is right, according to the standard.

"It is the first time that the concept of comfort is mentioned in a glasses standard," Hu said.
