Railways to see 10.3m passengers in 40 days
SHANGHAI’S railway stations expect to handle 10.3 million passengers during the 40-day Spring Festival holiday period, which starts tomorrow.
The total would be an 11 percent rise from last year.
The two weeks before the Chinese New Year, which falls on February 19, will be the busiest.
Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station expect to handle 420,000 passengers on February 14 alone.
Shanghai Railway Station will provide ticketing services round the clock and open extra counters to deal with exchanges and refunds. Medical points will be set up at all three stations to provide basic health care free of charge.
Plans have also been drawn up to deal with delays caused by extreme weather conditions. These include using schools, parking lots and local gymnasiums as temporary shelters for stranded passengers.
The railway authority said it will also consider adding more trains to popular destinations like Jiangsu, Sichuan, Hubei and Anhui provinces.
