Rapist gets 20 years' jail

A MAN was jailed for 20 years and fined 25,000 yuan (US$3,662) at Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday for robbery, rape and kidnap last summer.

Wang Jianghui committed burglary and rape on July 25, 2009, Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office said. Wang followed the victim, surnamed Han, to her home in the city's Jinshan District at 11pm and broke into the house at about midnight, the prosecutor said. Wang raped Han at knifepoint and stole 400 yuan cash and a cell phone.

Four days later, Wang robbed another woman in a phone booth on Huaihai Road in Luwan District, the prosecutor said. The woman, surnamed Yuan, was making a call about 11pm. Wang, who again had a knife, stole her cell phone and jewelry worth 820 yuan.

Yuan called the police when Wang ran off. As police gave chase, Wang took a woman passerby, surnamed Zhou, hostage about 1am in Yanzhong green park.

Threatening Zhou with the knife, Wang asked police to let him go. Wang was eventually caught an hour later on Yan'an Road M. near Chengdu Road S.

The court said the sentence took into account the fact that Wang had pled guilty.
