Rare blood donated to Liberian patient

Two Shanghai residents donated Rh negative blood yesterday to a brain tumor patient from Liberia who is seeking treatment in Shanghai, while donors from other provinces were said to be on the way.

The 30-year-old Liberian identified as Clara came to Shanghai after being diagnosed with meningioma and is being treated at Pudong Hospital. Prior to surgery, doctors found she has rare Rh negative blood and couldn’t proceed until enough blood is secured.

The hospital said at least 1,200 milliliters of Rh negative blood is needed in event of serious blood loss during surgery.

They contacted the city’s blood center last Friday.

Although it collected Rh negative blood the next day, it wasn’t enough.

The two donors went to the Shanghai Blood Center at 9am yesterday and donated blood to Clara.

“I had donated blood twice before after learning my type in 2004, when I did my first donation,” said Liu Yuqin, who is from Anhui Province. “I donated 400ml each time, twice the amount others usually donate.”

Liu said she was in good health and told others not to worry about her.

Ren Li, one of Clara’s doctors, said the tumor had grown to the size of a fist and was constricting Clara’s nerves. If she didn’t have surgery in time, she could get a cerebral hernia and possibly die.

Pudong Hospital said that if anyone wanted to donate Rh negative blood they could call 18918790167 and make arrangements with its staff.
