Rare letters, photos on display at archives

SHANGHAI Municipal Archives have put up unseen letters of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping on display for the first time.
The 240 letters and pictures belong to the State Archives Administration and showcase the personality and determination of the leaders. Zhu Jihua, the curator of the Shanghai archives, said the letters and documents show the leaders’ strong faith in Marxism and how they educated their children.
Mao Zedong (1893-1976), in a letter written in 1958 to his unwell daughter who underwent surgery, writes, “determination can overcome the disease.”
A 1955 work calendar belonging to the late Premier Zhou Enlai (1898-1976) with his notes on it shows he worked till midnight on May 15 and left his office at 2am on September 23.
Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997), when he was studying in Moscow in 1926, wrote that “I have decided to dedicate my life to our Party.”
Over 40 letters and documents are being displayed to the public for the first time. Other highlights of the exhibition include the only page left of the German draft of The Manifesto of the Communist Party.
The exhibition is being held on the fourth floor of the Shanghai archive at 9 Zhongshan Road E. and will last till year-end.
