Reading session brings book fair to end
The 10th and the biggest Shanghai Book Fair concluded yesterday with a first-ever reading session where 14 writers, editors and publishers read excerpts from the top 10 influential books from the fair.
The selection was based on sales numbers, media coverage and reader’s feedback.
The list included nine Chinese books such as the collection of speeches, talks, correspondence and notes of former premier Zhu Rongji and the sixth edition of the “Whys,” a popular series that explains science to children.
“The Human Body” by young Italian writer Paolo Giordano was the only foreign work in the list.
The annual seven-day event welcomed visitors from all over the world.
Many readers were attracted to the area where a dozen of small brick-and-mortar bookstores showcased their unique collections, a new and intriguing addition to the fair, at a time when bookstores are struggling from fierce competition from online sales.
In order to provide the record-breaking number of visitors a safer and better environment, the fair organizers had put in a large amount of effort to improve the facilities, ranging from adding outdoor mist sprayers near the waiting line before entrance to beat the intense heat outside.
There was also a much better free Wi-Fi coverage and mobile phone charging areas.
