Retirement home planned for island

XUHUI District is planning to construct a home for senior citizens on Chongming Island, and will encourage seniors to spend their retirement there.

The project has caused controversy among seniors, as they doubt whether they can receive proper medical care in Chongming - about 30 kilometers from the city's downtown area.

The Xuhui District Civil Affairs Bureau is selecting the site for the home, and the construction is expected to start early next?year.

"The home will be a comprehensive project for seniors of different economic backgrounds," said Ding Zhiwei, an official with the bureau. "We think that seniors from both Xuhui and Chongming will enjoy it."

According to the Shanghai Family Planning Committee, from 2013, 80 percent of seniors over the age 60 will be the first batch of parents to have encountered the country's one-child policy in the early 80s. As their children may not have enough time or energy to take care of elderly parents, many seniors may have to move to retirement homes, said the committee.
