Road cameras snap violators

NEW upgraded surveillance cameras on major road intersections in the city are snapping up traffic violators, police said.
Since April, 42 upgraded cameras have been installed at major thoroughfares that capture seven types of traffic violations, easing the load on the 4,000 traffic police officers.
The seven types of violations are crossing solid lines, illegally taking a U-turn, wrong-way driving, illegally changing lanes, illegally using bus-only lanes, lingering within yellow grid lines and illegal parking.
Police said the number of offenses on three busy intersections in Jing’an District since the new cameras were installed were down from 300-400 a day to 100 per day now as most drivers were aware of the cameras.
On an average, there are about 40,000 traffic offenses in Shanghai every day, and the city has 6,600 cameras on the roads. The new cameras sends back pictures of offenders to the data center at the district public security bureau. Based on the photographic evidence, tickets are issued to the violators.
The Hongkou District police said traffic violations on the intersections of Liuying Road and Baoxing Road N. and Suzhou Road N. and Waibaidu Bridge were down 90 percent.
