Road shut by worksite collapse is reopening

PINGXINGGUAN Road in Jing'an District was scheduled to be reopened this morning after it was partly closed on Wednesday when a 70-meter section of sidewalk along it collapsed due to construction work, Shanghai TV reported yesterday.

A district government statement said workers were getting out of the foundation pit when an underground supporting structure collapsed around 3 pm, resulting in the collapse of the sidewalk and some trees beside the construction site.

Workers stopped working immediately and evacuated people from the area, and the construction company ordered that the hole be filled to prevent it from expanding, said the statement.

Pingxingguan Road was closed between Lingshi Road and East Donghe Road, causing traffic jams on nearby roads.

The district government said it would monitor the site to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

The developer of the Jin Mao Palace yesterday said that the collapsed area was far enough away that the building will not be affected.

However, some people worried that the work could put their own homes at risk.

A man who bought an apartment in the first phase of Jin Mao Palace said: “I hope the authorities can carry out a thorough inspection of the site to make sure it is safe.

“Otherwise I will be afraid to move into my new house,” he said.
